Before and after photos: how to post them properly
Nothing shows your skill like a clear before and after. Done well, it is the best advertising a solo business can have. Done carelessly, it can upset clients.
Always ask first
Ask every client whether you can photograph and share their work, and wait for a yes. For nails, the hands alone are often fine. For faces, be especially careful.
Be clear about where it will go
"Can I post this on my Instagram?" is clearer than "Can I take a photo?" Tell them if you might use it on your website or in adverts.
Respect a no
Some people prefer not to be photographed. Never make them feel awkward. You can often take photos of the back of a haircut or just the nails.
Keep a record
A quick message or a note saying they agreed is enough. If someone later asks you to remove a photo, do it promptly.
Protect children
For under-18s, get a parent or guardian's permission, and think carefully about whether to post faces at all.
Take better photos
- Use natural light or a bright lamp.
- Keep the background plain and tidy.
- Shoot the before and after from the same angle.
- Do not over-edit, so people trust what they see.
Pets are people's family
Dog owners usually love photos, but still ask. Avoid showing the home or the street in a way that tells people where they live.
The takeaway
Ask, be clear and be kind. Photos taken with permission build trust, and trust brings bookings.
